Writing

As a freelance writer, Jane has a portfolio of published articles.

Jane Milburn is delighted to have been a finalist in the Excellence in Rural Reporting category of the 2007 Queensland Media Awards (“Life and Love in the Heartland”) against quality competition. Winners of the rural category, Pip Courtney and Sally Sara, went on to be named Journalist of the Year for their ABC Landline report “Black Dog”.

Earlier, Jane was thrilled to win the Media Award at the 2005 Queensland Primary Industries Achievement Awards for coverage of the sale of Stanbroke Pastoral Company. Jane's article
Prime Cut was published in the Courier-Mail Business section and outlined the carve-up of the Stanbroke empire. The sale was a great corporate coup for the successful bidders but left the former owners, AMP Life policyholders, dudded by a cool $200-300 million. Read article (PDF - 80kb).

Jane’s freelance feature Late Starters published in The Courier-Mail exposed the inequities in Queensland’s preschool education system in 1998 and the story was Highly Commended: Best Print Media Feature in the Australian Council of Deans of Education 1999 awards. The Queensland Government has since moved to introduce an additional prep year for all Queensland school children.

Jane only writes freelance articles about issues that do not represent a conflict of interest with her media consultancy projects.
